The Four Elements Personality Guide: Fire, Water, Earth and Air

Long before modern psychology, people described character using the four classical elements. It's a poetic system, and it's still a fun way to talk about how we think and behave. Think of it as a mirror, not a rulebook.

Fire: passion and courage

Fire people act boldly, inspire others and dislike standing still. Strengths: energy, leadership, enthusiasm. Watch out for: impatience and burning out.

Water: emotion and intuition

Water people feel deeply and sense what others feel. Strengths: empathy, creativity, adaptability. Watch out for: absorbing other people's moods and overthinking.

Earth: stability and loyalty

Earth people are dependable, practical and patient. Strengths: reliability, persistence, common sense. Watch out for: stubbornness and resisting change.

Air: ideas and communication

Air people are curious, social and quick-minded. Strengths: creativity, humor, flexibility. Watch out for: restlessness and staying in your head.

Most of us are a mix

Few people are only one element. You might be a fiery leader with a watery heart, or an earthy planner with an airy sense of humor. The combination is what makes you interesting.

Finding your balance

A helpful trick is to look at the element you're least like and borrow from it when you need to. Fire can learn patience from earth, and air can learn depth from water.
