Choosing where to live is one of the biggest decisions you can make, and lists of "best countries" only tell part of the story. Start with yourself.
1. What climate makes you happy?
Some people love four seasons, others want endless sun. Think about the weather you'd enjoy in February and August, not just on vacation.
2. How do you want to spend your weekends?
Beaches, mountains, museums, nightlife or quiet neighborhoods? The place you choose should make your ideal weekend easy.
3. What does your work look like?
Do you need a big job market, or can you work remotely? Check time zones, internet quality and whether your profession is in demand.
4. What is your budget, really?
Rent, healthcare, taxes and everyday costs vary hugely. Look at total living costs rather than just headline prices.
5. How important is language?
Learning a language can be part of the adventure, but daily life is easier where you can communicate. Be honest about how much effort you'll put in.
6. What kind of community do you want?
Some places have big expat communities; others are more local and tight-knit. Think about what will make you feel at home.
7. What can you try first?
Spend a few weeks in your shortlist before deciding. A trial stay tells you more than any list.
